Attorney Profile

Brian Kaser has practiced law since 1980 with large and mid-size law firms.  Before opening his independent practice, he was the health care group leader in a firm of approximately 90 lawyers.  For many years his practice has focused on the needs of three groups of clients:  Elder service organizations, health care providers of all types, and non-profit corporations and trusts.

Mr. Kaser is a 1978 honors graduate of the Boston University School of Law, and served his initial apprenticeship in the law as clerk to the Chief Judge of the Michigan Court of Appeals.  He is rated "AV" in the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory, the highest peer review rating achievable in the oldest peer-reviewed directory in the country.  His name also has appeared in another nationwide compilation, "Best Lawyers in America."

Mr. Kaser is a frequent speaker at the American Health Lawyers Association's annual Long Term Care and the Law conference, which draws lawyers from all over the country.  He has spoken on nursing home payment and resident rights issues and, most recently, legal ethics.

One of the most gratifying experiences in his professional life has been Mr. Kaser's  affiliations with the associations that represent health care providers, including the Michigan Health and Hospital Association, the Michigan Association of Homes and Services for the Aging and the Health Care Association of Michigan.   In 2004-2006 Mr. Kaser served the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA) on its Financing Cabinet.  The Cabinet recommended, and the AAHS board of directors approved, AAHSA's policy initiative for funding long term care through the 21st century.

Since 2002, Mr. Kaser has been an adjunct professor at the Michigan State University College of Law, teaching general health care law, legal issues in physician practice, and, most recently, health care fraud and abuse, a course for which he collected and edited an original set of instructional materials.

Mr. Kaser publishes often, most frequently in client and association newsletters -- and on this site (see Legal Updates).  He has authored a chapter on the attorney/client privilege in the Health Care Compliance Manual, a publication of the Lexis/Nexis group.
